Alternative to grass?

Hi, Iam using unitys default grass and it works great and all but the thing is, I need it to work on mobile devices, and some of them (probably tegra devices) have performance problems. I have galaxy s 2 (dual-core) which runs my app at double fps than nexus 7 with tegra 3.. The only problem seems to be the grass. So, Iam using as low grass as possible but now I have a whole hill to cover. Does anyone know any alternatives or some tricks etc. to make grass eat less of cpu/gpu.

It's really the grass? If you remove all the grass (or turn off grass or something) it runs fine?

Because Terrain by itself on mobile might be pushing it, and can coarsen the mesh or drop the base$$anonymous$$ap distance to try to help with that.

Well, i was suffering of this problem, and i still have it. Maybe with meshes and atlas it can be done but the thing is that you can't paint it into the terrain...

The usual is advice to drop the Terrain DetailDistance (in the gear) -- how far away grass is drawn.

Then, can use a lot fewer grass planes than you think (paint with low Opacity/TargStrength, or lower the DetailDensity.) Esp. if you can get the base of the grass to match the terrain color (they seem to use different lighting, so can be tricky.) Normally the mismatched base is covered by other grass.

The grass itself can be wider and taller, allowing you to use fewer of them.

Then, the "flat" terrain texture can be more grassy. You see of lot of flat-looking grass textures, which help avoid seams and artifacts. But, you can get away with using a more interesting high-contrast terrain grass texture. Use a "fun" brush and opacity 1-5ish to brush over a different sized texture, just enough to cover the artifacts of the 1st.

I already did set everything so that I can use as low amount of grass as possible. The thing is I have a scene that has a big view distance, camera only moves up and down but the big view distance is important. Editing texture might help. I will give it a shot, thank you.
