Question by Ian 3 · Jan 18, 2011 at 11:50 PM · 2d

Uh, how do I make a 2D game? o_o

I haven't learned how to use Unity yet, but all the tutorials I'm seeing are for 3D games.

So anyway, my question is: will I know how to make 2D games with Unity after going through a beginner 3D tutorial, or is there a specific tutorial I should look at for 2D games? I'm not familiar with the differences between 2D and 3D development.

Do you want a completely 2d game or is just the gameplay 2d? Like do you want to do a side scroller using nothing but 2d pictures or do you want to make your world out of 3d objects and just have the camera on the side?

With 2D games, you'd want the camera to be orthographic.

Also, you will probably have less moving objects... Well, not necessarily, but your question is broad.

You have to tell us the plot of your game... For instance, is this to be like the old Mario scroller games? Or is it like pong?

Also, through a simple Google search, a LOT of things came up...

If you google your questions, often times, you'll get what you need for your project.

Have to chime in here. The gameplay can be 2d while the world is 3d. Or even 2d objects set in a 3d world. In those cases you might not want an ortho cam.

Yea, that's true, good point.
