Fade From Position into Animation

I'm stuck trying to figure out how to blend from my Player's current transform.position into an animation. The problem I'm getting is that without blending the animation simply jumps to the position that the animation starts from, and I can't add a parent to the Player at this point. I also can't perform a transform.translate to get to the animation's starting position.

Initially I had thought that since there was no keyframes for position.x, position.y or position.z that it would simply start the animation from the current transform.position however it doesn't.

I've tried each of these but none seem to do it.

 animation.Blend ("PlayerInstantDeath", 1, 4);  // Doesn't do it
 animation.CrossFade("PlayerInstantDeath", 4);  // Doesn't do it
 animation["PlayerInstantDeath"].AddMixingTransform(transform);  // Doesn't do it
 //animation.Play("PlayerInstantDeath", PlayMode.StopAll);  // Doesn't do it

Does anyone know of a way of fading into an animation,without already having an animation running, and without scripting a transform.translate first?
