Move object up relative to another object

I need to move an object (other) up a certain distance, relative to another object, but I can't rely on the (other) object's y axis pointing up relative to anything.

Right now it moves up, from what I can tell, just the way I want, but it moves up continuously, I need it to only move up a certain distance.

This is part of a OnTriggerEnter function.

  other.transform.Translate(Vector3.up * Time.deltaTime, Space.World);

Not enough code here to give you something specific. Only do the translate if the object distance is smaller than "certain distance."

 if (other.transform.position.y - another.transform.position.y < certain_distance)
    other.transform.Translate(Vector3.up * Time.deltaTime, Space.World);

Note this code will allow the object to be just slightly more apart than "certain distance," since the last translate can take it over a bit. If that is an issue, you will need a second check that catches the situation and moves them precisely "certain distance".
