Internal Compiler Error - Unhandled Exception

I am currently running Unity 3.1 Pro and when I went to open my project just now I got the error "Internal compiler error. See the console log for more information. output was: Unhandled Exception: System.BadImageFormatException" with a path leading to smcs.exe.

Edit 0: smcs.exe exists in Program Files/Unity, not in any of the files I've been working on.

This is the first time I've seen this error, and I've seen a few similar things on the board but with different errors. I am getting this code from TortiseSVN, but it hasn't caused any problems with Unity before.

Things I've tried:

  • Closing out Unity completely and opening it again
  • Logging out and logging back in again
  • Restarting the computer
  • Looking for updates (none available)
  • Updated the code from the SVN repository.
  • Edit 1: Uninstalling Unity and reinstalling.

I've also googled this and couldn't find anything relevant. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm no expert but I would check that none of the images in your project have been corrupted. Try to open or preview each one if possible. I would also delete your project and get a fresh copy from the SVN repository. I've worked on big projects with SVN and sometimes things can get out of sync.

I didn't mention this the first time around, but the problem file is in the Unity Program Files folder, not in any of my code

"BadImage" means an executable or DLL image, not an image file. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.badimageformatexception.aspx

I'd try reinstalling Unity (and running a scan on your hard drive, not necessarily in that order).

Reinstalling Unity acts more like a patch than anything else. It will work for some time, then randomly get the same error again.

Try running smcs.exe directly (using the command prompt) and see what happens. smcs.exe is in %$$anonymous$$Y UNITY INSTALL FOLDER%\\Editor\\Data\\$$anonymous$$onoBleedingEdge\\lib\\mono\\unity\\
