Moving an Object based on other transforms.

Okay so I have a catapult that I am attaching to a car. The catapult also has a child called "Offset" which I want to move my object by once it attaches to the car. So what is happening is I'm telling the object to move in my script, and it's not. When I look in the editor it shows the values of the offset in the parents transform; but did not apply them. If I take the same line of code and instead of trying to move it by the child transform. Just move it by +2.0f. It works fine. Any Ideas why that's happening? Here's the code:

 CatapultMesh=transform.FindChild("Catapult Mesh");
 CatapultOffset=CatapultMesh.FindChild("Offset").localPosition;
 CatapultMesh.localPosition=CatapultOffset;

and heres the code that works:

 CatapultOffset.x=0.6f;
 CatapultMesh=transform.FindChild("Catapult Mesh");
 CatapultMesh.localPosition=CatapultOffset;
