Access to float4 _MainTex_ST in surface shader

Is there a general way to get the untransformed texture coordinate and the offset and scaling factor inside a surface shader?

when i define float4 _MainTex_ST for a texture called "_MainTex", the compiler errors. I think what is happening is that when the surface shader is compiled "float4 _MainTex_ST" gets redefined and that causes an error...

I am aware that using standard vertex/pixel shader I can side step that problem, but I am looking for a solution that lets me stick with surface shaders...
