Question by EBR · Jul 18, 2013 at 05:08 PM · fbxmac3dsmaxconvertmax

Is there a way to convert .max files to .fbx without 3dsmax?

I know that some people might think this question shouldn't be in this forum but in the 3dsmax one but it is worth a shot. I am new to unity and I have a mac, so i don't have 3dsmax :(. Is there a way to covert .max files without windows?

Yes, there are several ways to convert it.

  • Download Blender.org that is free, import 3ds model improve it as you wish ans save it as FBX

  • Or use the official FBX converter : http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/item?siteID=123112&id=22694909

  • Or other tools like Rhino, Cinema4D, Maya, MayaLt, ZBrush, zBrushCore for time period or purchase them, import 3ds model improve it as you wish and save it as FBX

As previously stated in answers to this question, neither Blender nor the Autodesk convertor support the proprietary .max file format - you need 3DS $$anonymous$$ax for that.

Alan, $$anonymous$$amil and others, please read the posted question before you start posting answers that have nothing to do with the question. EBR was asking out .max files, not 3ds or fbx. To $$anonymous$$amil, what you posted makes no sense at all, sorry. Blender has nothing to do with .max for anyone else like myself and EBR who are trying to convert the large number of *.max models out there to a more widely used format. So far it seems the only options are: 1) Buy 3DS$$anonymous$$AX. 2) Get temporary trial version of 3DS$$anonymous$$AX. 3) Get someone to convert it for you. Note to 3D $$anonymous$$odel uploaders, please stop using unpopular, unsupported formats when you upload models. Thanks.

Download free software (all platforms) where you can make the same models:

https://www.blender.org/

Then go to File>import and choose your type of file, then open your file. Secondly go to export, choose .fbx and here it is.

Autodesk has a free FBX Converter that you can use as well:

That converter could support many file formats, but, unfortunately, not the .max file.
