How do I prevent mecanim from centering animations?

Hi everyone,

I am having trouble with mecanim after converting over from the old legacy system. My main issue is that mecanim is centering all frames of an animation around the pelvis of my character as that is his centre point. This makes complete sense in most scenarios, but if I have an animation where the character leans back, then his feet shoot out instead (See picture attached). It also makes it very tricky for mini-cutscenes (that can occur in a variable position) where it's entirely animation based.

As you can see from the above, the character's pelvis is off-centre.

The legacy system was fine for this, but I understand the need to keep up with the times and so am trying to convert to Mecanim, and this is my one big wall that's stopping me.

I have tried the 'bake into pose' setting and setting the 'Based upon' option to original, but while I can see it's made some change, it hasn't resolved it completely.

Any help would be appreciated, and if I haven't given enough details, please let me know.
