Question by lemiwinks · Aug 03, 2013 at 04:31 PM · raycastballray

Whats going wrong with this Raycasting Method?

hey there again, ive got a ray casting downwards from a ball in my scene and tracking the distance of the ray through the console window. now when the distance of the ray is over 0.5 (ball is off the ground), i want the ball to go back down.

to put it simple, i want the ball the stay on the ground.. Now ive used the following script to do this however when the ball is off the ground, the ball positions itself off to the right of the scene out of the level.

Can anyone tell me where im going wrong?

heres the script:

 using UnityEngine;
 using System.Collections;

 public class Ball_keepDown : MonoBehaviour {

     Vector3 GroundPoint;
     Vector3 BallPoint;
     Vector3 Dir;

     public GameObject Ball;

     // Use this for initialization
     void Start () {

     }

     // Update is called once per frame
     void Update () {

         RaycastHit hit;
         if (Physics.Raycast(transform.position, -Vector3.up, out hit)){

             print (hit.distance);
         }

         if (hit.distance > 0.51){

         Debug.LogWarning("Its over .5");
         Ball.transform.position = -Ball.transform.up * hit.distance;
         }

     }
 }

Line 37 should be something like:

 Ball.transform.position = hit.point + 0.5f * Vector3.up;

Exactly that would be:

 Ball.transform.position = hit.point + 0.5f * Vector3.up;

Don't forget to add f after a float number in C#.

I keep switching back and forth between C# and Javascript to answer question and forgetting the 'f'.
