Question by cregox · Aug 16, 2013 at 06:35 PM · updatemonodevelop

MonoDevelop not working since Unity 4.1!

I Had Unity 4.0.x, then tried to update to 4.1.x, suddenly MonoDevelop stopped working. It just doesn't open and brings a very weird window error.

Then I reverted back to Unity 4.0.0, eventually updated to Unity 4.0.1, all without issues... Now Unity 4.2 was released and I finally decided to try and update. Same issue.

What's going on Unity Team? Why isn't this solved yet? How could you even let this to happen?!

As **sonicviz** mentioned:

At the very bottom of Unity 4.2 release notes: MonoDevelop may fail to start correctly on Windows if an old version of Gtk# is installed on the system. Please uninstall this version, and install a newer one if still needed.

GTK# has been the problem, and uninstalling it has been the "solution", at least since Unity 4.1.4.

In my experience, updating GTK# to latest version (2.12.10) wasn't good enough. But uninstalling it was an instant fix.

P.S.: Really, I just wanted to feed unityAnswers here. Did I mentioned already I hate forums?

I am experiencing g the same issue on $$anonymous$$ac. How do I fix this on $$anonymous$$ac?

There is no "Look for installed software and just uninstall it" option since 99% of software is distributed in the form of a folder that you just copy over or delete. How do I detect if I have GT$$anonymous$$? How to uninstall it if I do? What is GT$$anonymous$$? Why would I even have it in the first place?

Super crappy that Unity doesn't work right because I (might) have something completely unrelated installed somewhere on my system... and no indication of how to get Unity working right again... :(

edit: P.s. I agree with you on the hating forums shit. If you ever feel tired of living, visit the Apple forums for that final push to commit suicide. Nothing worse that looking for a solution to a problem only to read through 90 pages of "Yeah, I have this error too" posts... FFS... how is THAT helpful at all? :(

Well, this will be tough, @$$anonymous$$rDude.

I've got it working on 2 different macs, here at work and back at home... And boy, do I have a lot of shit installed in my computer at home! I've been using same installation since OS 10.5, the leopard or something.

I can only advice you to research what kind of frameworks $$anonymous$$onoDevelop uses on mac and look for them on your mac. It seems like it uses GT$$anonymous$$+ (and not GT$$anonymous$$#). And yes, this is still a bug with Unity's $$anonymous$$onoDevelop for pretty sure. It still sucks a lot. And they assumed it in my question's link.

If by any chance you have unity pro, get in touch with them. They oughta help you out.

Now I am even more lost. It seems that on Windows the solution is to uninstall the GT$$anonymous$$ but on $$anonymous$$acs I need to make sure I have the right version? # or + ? Hmmm... Thing that bothers me the most is that I don't recall installing that so if I didn't install it, which app did? ...and if I uninstall it, won't I now break THAT app?

I think perhaps contacting Unity directly might be the way to go but I don't think my owning pro should make a difference to them helping me. But who to contact, that is the better question... Contacting them through Bug Report is NOT a way to go if you expect help so the best method would be to post here or on the forums, I would think...

...but since the forum is filled with "$$anonymous$$e too" and "I tried this and that" posts, and a number of such threads to boot, asking there would require that I just do a "$$anonymous$$e too" post... And if here is the best place to ask, well then, I suppose the question is now asked... Let's see if I get any hits :D

@$$anonymous$$rDude bug report and emails. I got a lot of support from them in both ways, mostly email though. When it is such a bug, they always request a bug report, so you may be able to advance yourself if you are able to do it (which I don't think it is the case here).

Answers is good for well known issues - not such unknown ones. $$anonymous$$ost people who come here to help can only know so far and it's very hard, although it happens, to get answers from unity $$anonymous$$m insiders. Also, if you are to have such luck, you better off asking your question rather than posting a comment in an answered question. Link it everywhere. I'd go every way if I were you.
