Question by HSMInteractive · Aug 18, 2013 at 10:46 PM · textureterrainlightingworldbrightness

Terrain really bright for no reason

I don't know how this happened but my terrain is really bright. It doesn't matter what texture I add:

The rest of my scene's lighting is normal. And it's not just my project, it does this in all my projects now. I have one directional light with lightmaps and my ambient light is set to light grey.

Did you manipulate the terrain via script, in any way?

What kind of shader are you using on the material for the terrain?

@Sajidfarooq No.

@JoaquinRD none. it says none

Is your directional light pointing straight down? If yes, rotate it slightly and see if it begins to make a difference.

@Sajidfarooq Thanks. It worked but my directional light is pointing straight forward. Is that normal?

Never$$anonymous$$d. It's still really bright as soon as I brought my heightmap in.

Can you show us a picture of the terrain with some other objects in the scene as well? This would help us gauge just how bright the terrain is relative to other objects.

Sure:

It looks normal flat: alt text

The issue is when I add height you cna clearly see the bright spot and its only on that side too.

Well this one doesnt seem all that bad. Can you show us one where its really aweful, like the ones above. I want to compare how the rest of the scene looks like when the terrain is nearly blown white.

I can't seem to get it to be as bright as it was but this is what it looks like Still really bright.

Well this terrain doesn't look overly bright to me. The original image was certainly worrying though.

Here is the same scene with sand. I guess it isn't fixed.

I noticed something. When I look down it's really bright but darkens as I look up. That's only in the editor though, not the game view.

That's not a bug. Your ambient light is too high. In fact, I would recommend removing it completely. Just use a directional light to represent the sun, and point-lights for the interiors and where it is very dark. Also, if you have pro, you should use Global Illu$$anonymous$$ation as well.

Thanks. I fixed it. Byt I've got a question. What is Global Illu$$anonymous$$ation and how do I use it? I keep hearing about it but have no idea how to use it.

I have a same problem, just go to Player Settings > Other Settings , change Color Space from Gamma to Linear.

I was having the same problem with an imported character. Rachan's suggestion fixed it for me, thx!

And, just in case anybody didn't know where player settings was, it's under File->Build Settings

Same problem. Finally my terrain has complete black spots. Player Settings can also be found in Edit > Project Settings > Player.

This helped but what really helped me was lowering Environment Lighting intensity multiplier, under lighting settings. I opted to leave it as gamma as I found it looks better than linear.

The issue is probably the project settings - I had the same problem after importing an asset which changed them.

If anyone comes across the same issue in future, check your Rendering Path and Color Space at Build Settings > Player Settings > Other Settings.

I am having this same issue now. My terrain is mostly yellow/orange. I have looked at my player settings and I'm still using "Forward" rendering path with "Gamma" color space. Nothing should have changed. I've tried different shaders and materials. I've also tried re-doing my global illumination lighting settings. Nothing seems to work so far.

I've tried messing with my directional light settings, and yes the color of light is yellowish-white, but darkening the color does not fix the problem.

I recently upgraded from a Unity 5 beta version to the Unity 5.0.1 full version (personal edition). And that's when I started having this problem. I'm not sure whats causing it.
