Question by Reid · Mar 12, 2011 at 02:01 PM · nullreferenceexception

How do I fix this NullReferenceException?

ok I am trying to have an object move to another object "target" then once it is there move to another object "target"

I thought my script would make this happen but I got this error "NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and I have no clue about how to fix it I don't think it is caused by my script but it might so here is what I have

var target1 : GameObject; var target2 : GameObject; var sit : int = 5; var speed : float = 1; private var point;

function Awake () { transform.position = target1.transform.position; }

function Update () { sit -= Time.time; transform.position = point; }//update

function OnTriggerEnter (other : Collider) { if(other.tag == "target1"){ Debug.Log("hit target1"); if (sit <= 0){ point = target2.transform.position speed Time.deltaTime; } } if(other.tag == "target2"){ Debug.Log("hit target2"); if (sit <= 0){ point = target1.transform.position speed Time.deltaTime; } } }//ontriggerenter

any help would be greatly appreaciated thanks in advanced

What line do you get that error on?

By the way a null reference exception occur when you are trying to use an object that doesn't exist (is null). I am no JS guru, but your point variable doesn't have any type defined for it. The compiler might be smart enough to realize it must be a Vector3, but I dont know for sure. If it becomes dynamic I guess the default value would be null, and you're trying to set transform.position = point; which could then be transform.position = null. This isn't valid since position expects a Vector3, which is a value type, which can't be null to begin with. I am not sure if a cast operation would cast

null in that case. Otherwise the other two points where anything can throw that I can spot is in your OnTriggerEnter, where null reference exception will be thrown if target2 or target 1 is null since you can't access the transform (or any other member) of null references.

Try defining the type for point.

private var point : Vector3;

Also make sure you have set the target1 and target2 GameObject variables before you run your game.
