Click/touch detection on Quad with alpha texture

So I have a quad drawn on screen with a png texture of a spaceship applied to it. The material is set to factor in alpha values of the texture.

OnMouseDown() { } allows me to write code for when the QUAD itself was clicked / touched.

My question is: basically, how would I factor in the alpha of the texture so that my code is only executed when the player clicks/touches the actual texture itself.

pseudo code would be something like:

 OnMouseDown() 
 { 
     if (!pixelCollisionDetected)
         return;
 
     // TODO: code here
 }

Something like this:

  1. Raycast from mouse to plane

  2. Get ray collision point on plane

  3. Get UV coordinates of point by dividing by plane's width/height (and taking into account tiling if any)

  4. Read the pixel at the UV coordinate

  5. Check if its alpha value is below a certain threshold

Should work. Not exactly a fast procedure, so if this is happening many times per frame, then it might lag your game.
