Cordinate System Question Parent/Child

So I have made a GameObject that acts as a container for all of the game pieces. This is the parent. I have a bunch of child objects.

I'm interested in one of the child objects position. But I don't quite understand when I output it's localposition it's a constant.

Can someone give me some information to the reason this is happening?

If the localPosition isn't changing that means the object isn't moving with respect to the parent.

What does that mean? The parent has a script that makes it move upward and the child is moving with it's parent.

You're a child of the Earth. If you stand still, from your perspective, you are not moving. But from an outside perspective both you and the Earth are moving very quickly. Same situation here.

That makes sense. So I guess what's the work around to something like this if I'm interested In The position of a child? Thank you for your response.

The position of any object in world space is available as transform.position. http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/ScriptReference/Transform-position.html
