Unity claims no update available when there are new version available

I use Unity daily and I was stuck on 4.1. Right before Unite 2013 I noticed 4.2 was already out on the Unity website. Went into unity, no update notification was showing (I do have check for updates marked). I manually checked for update using the help menu, it claimed my 4.1 version was up to date. So I manually downloaded 4.2 from the Unity website.

Now I noticed there is a 4.2.1, which again, unity does not recognize and I am downloading it manually as we speak. Any ideas why this started happening? The updates were showing fine while I was in the extended trial (Oculus Rift extended trial), but as soon as I added a full Unity Pro license the update notification and checking stopped working.

Any ideas?

Have you looked at your firewall? Perhaps the connection back to the mothership is getting thwarted

I noticed this too. Normally it does say something. I just went and downloaded from the website.

This has happened to me as well. Although Eric5h5's answer makes sense, my editor still says that there are no updates. $$anonymous$$y editor's version is 4.3.2.f1, however, 4.5.2 is already out for download. Should I wait until my editor realizes the new update, or just download a new version of Unity3D Pro?

It never worked nor said anything for me, it's always been outdated. They need to update their update tool.

I received my first update check notification today for Unity 5.2.2f1 to Unity 5.2.3f1. We'll see if things go the same for the next version. (The download button still brings you to the website so that you download the installer manually as you used to.)

They don't activate the auto-update notification in Unity unless the new version has been out for a while and they're happy with the results.

that makes sense for the auto-update, but why would they disable the manual "check for updates"?

You can do that through the website.
