"Painting" a plane and reading color percentages

Hello,

I'm working on a project that involves several paint blobs falling down the screen leaving trails behind them that paint over previous trails. At the end of a certain amount of time, I need to be able to determine rough percentages of each color showing. It's essentially the same as the Stamp Out mini-game from Mario Party 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSDWrP3gze8).

I've tried using the trail renderer, but the paint blobs destroy themselves and are replaced as soon as they go out of bounds, which destroys the trail as well. It's also impossible to have them paint over each other since everything is locked into the X and Z dimensions. I suppose I could have everything travelling slowly in the Y direction so new trails will cover old ones, but then I have no idea how to get color percentages.

Does anyone have an idea of how to go about this?

The way I would go about doing this would involve setting pixel colors of a Texture2D. Wherever your paint blob currently lies above the canvas, you would set those pixels to the corresponding color of the blob. Once the drawing is done, you would just need to loop over all the pixels of the texture and keep track of how many were of each color. There may be some more details to work out along the way, but that should give you a good place to start.
