Question by dansav · Sep 25, 2013 at 06:02 PM · alphapng

3d model has huge tiff images how do I reduce and keep alpha?

alt textI have a model that came with some enormous tiff files 27mb,27mb and 64mb. I tried converting these to pngs in photoshop but they lost the alpha channel information. Is there a way to reduce the size and still keep the transparency? Why didn't the png conversion work?

Edit: Here is a post of how it should look and how it looks in photoshop with alpha channel activated. It's like the alpha channel does not provide the correct mask? Maybe it wasn't created in a way that photoshop understands? alt text

It's a bit flimsey. Photoshop supports both transparency and alpha channels. Some shaders need one or the other. To make sure the alpha channel gets saved, make it visible before saving. You'll see your picture overlayed with red in that case. If that doesn't work, just cut it out so you see the photoshop checkerboard.

I've edited the original post to show how the tif looks when viewed in preview on the mac -- looks good, and in photoshop --black. I can't just select the black and delete it to get the checkerboards because that doesn't look good. How do I make the alpha channel visible to try the second method.

I got the alpha channel visible --selecting the eye in the channels panel but it's still having some problems with the file I'm uploading a third and fourth screenshot to show the problem

I've uploaded two different images to show the alpha channel weirdness in comparison with how it should look. So cutting out by selecting a color and deleting it doesn't work, and the alpha channel looks incorrect. Any other ideas?

I've always found that tga files work a lot better with alpha channels than png's.
