Question by Commander Quackers · Dec 08, 2013 at 10:08 PM · shaderfreechromein

Chrome effect shader in Unity free?

Would it be possible for one to achieve a chrome-like effect with a shader, in Unity Free? I know Unity Free doesn't support reflections/refractions but is there a way to at least fake this? It would add to the look of my games' M1911 to give it a shiny look. Thanks in advance!

use cube maps over a bump shader to make reflections/refractions in unity free :). whenever you enter a new level, use a script to assign the new levels cube map to your M1911 material.

btw to make a cube map of the scene, you just adjust the camera setting(i set mine to 1024x1024), the prntScn (print screen) it and each multiple rotation of 90.use an image edior to paste and crop the size

unity pro lets you use render textures, so the reflections are can be real-time.

Reflective shaders are available in the free version.

Also, (for pro users) there is a basic cube map generator script available here.

And for non-pro users, I wrote a cubemap generator script here.
