Question by greenpez · Jan 11, 2014 at 12:37 PM · positioning

object leaving screen then coming back on the other side

I'm making a game with the kind of movement where if something goes off screen, it returns on the other side of the screen. I've already figured out the detection for when something goes off the screen, my only problem now is working out the exact point at which the object should return on screen. The objects I have are moving in diagonals, so it's not just a simple case of "it went off the right, put it back in the same y position on the left". Essentially I'm trying to find the co-ordinates for point A in this diagram: http://i.imgur.com/4LbGwWB.jpg

Here's what I have so far

 function Update () {
     var currentPos : Vector3 = Camera.main.WorldToViewportPoint (transform.position);
     if(currentPos.x > 1){
         //off the right
     } else if (currentPos.x < 0){
         //off the left
     } else if (currentPos.y > 1){
         //off the bottom
     } else if (currentPos.y < 0){
         //off the top
     }
 }

Even though movement is diagonal it does not change the fact that it is as simple as "it went off the right, put it back in the same y position on the left". This is true for any kind of movement direction. It goes off on the right it appears on the left in the same height and keep moving in the same direction.

As long as the functionality you want is for the objects reappear on the other side this should work fine. Have you tried to do this? And if you have what was the result you were not satisfied with?

That's not really what I was after with the original question, but I think you're right that it should actually work this way. Thanks!
