Blender Issue

Hi all! I made a model in Blender and it comes up with this error when I drag it into Unity: Blender could not be found. Make sure that Blender is installed and the .blend file has Blender as its 'Open with' application! UnityEditorInternal.InternalEditorUtility:ProjectWindowDrag(HierarchyProperty, Boolean) UnityEditor.DockArea:OnGUI()

I have no idea what this means I've never used Blender with Unity before. How can I fix this?

How did you put the model into Unity? Did you export it from Blender or simply drag the file in your project?

Did you save it as a .blend? It should import .blends just fine. What version of unity are you using?

If you are saving a Blender file as a .blend; you need to be in Object Mode when the model is saved, otherwise Unity will not be able to properly access it. Another solution is to export the model as an Autodesk (fbx) file from Blender.

How would I import it as an fbx?

You just drag it to your asset folder, same as before.

It sounds like Unity can't find Blender; the easiest thing to try is to do a reinstall of Blender. If that doesn't work, move on to the next section.

Try going to one of your .blend files and right-clicking it >Open With> Select Blender, then make sure the "Always use selected program to open this kind of file" checkbox on the bottom left is checked. If it opens in Blender without an error, try importing it into Unity as an Asset. Right-Click your Project List in Unity and hit Import New Asset. Find the file you want, and import it that way.

If that fails to work, you may need to set up an Environment Variable in Windows to direct Unity to the Python FBX importer that Blender uses. A tutorial on how to accomplish this is here.

If that doesn't work, then your model may be too-large for Unity. It is supposed to auto-chop mesh files that are too large up on its own, but you may be encountering a bug in that system. If that is the case you could try making the model smaller and then exporting it. If it still doesn't work, you'll probably have to file a bug report with Unity.

Export from Blender as an FBX. Install Free FBX Converter and run the fbx through it, bringing it to an updated fbx format.

Unitys support for .Blend is limited.

Installing Autodesk FBX SD$$anonymous$$ could help with some issues.

IMPORTANT: if you are using a copy of blender downloaded off of Steam, it will not work. Get the official copy from the website!

Small correction.

On the official website, at least on Windows, you can get 2 different download version $$anonymous$$SI and ZIP files.

The ZIP files is a standalone .exe application which doesn't install anything. This version doesn't register any .dll files (like file extensions) into Windows registry making Unity unable to "detect" the Blender's installation. S$$anonymous$$m also uses this version of Blender.

The $$anonymous$$SI file is the usual Windows installer method which install the required .dll files for Windows to recognize .blend files. This is the version you got to install if you want Unity to recognize .blend files.
