Question by Mjhurtado1 · Jan 22, 2014 at 07:34 AM · c#nullreferenceexception

NullReferenceException: I need some help here

NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object that's what it says but I'm not sure how to fix it, I was able to figure out where its coming from tho. My ItemCounter script:

I'm kind of new to C# so I might have done something dumb.

 using UnityEngine;
 using System.Collections;
 using System.Collections.Generic;

 public class ItemCounter : MonoBehaviour {

     private bool finished = false;
     public int maxItems;
     public GameObject enableThis;
     public GameObject disableThis;
     public int currentItems = 0;

     void Update(){
         if(currentItems >= maxItems && finished == false){
             enableThis.SetActive(true);
             disableThis.SetActive(false);
             finished = true;
         }
     }

     void OnTriggerEnter(Collider items){
         if(items.gameObject.name == "item"){
             currentItems += 1;
         }

     }

     void OnTriggerExit(Collider leave){
         if (leave.gameObject.name == "item") {
             currentItems -= 1;
         }
     }

 }

You either have to set enableThis and disableThis in Awake() using GameObject.Find, or drag them from the hierarchy view to the slot in the Inspector.

They are both set in the inspector, both or set to an object, but still no luck, it works is the unity editor player but not in a dev build or normal build of the game

Which line is the error occurring on? The debug log will tell you. It simply means your code is referring to something that isn't there, so for everything that you are referring to in your code do a Debug.Log(referreditem) right before you refer to it. Replacing referreditem with the name of the item of course.
