Question by Jared3712 · Jan 24, 2014 at 08:40 PM · crashing

My Unity3D Editor Keeps Crashing

When I first got Unity it ran fine and I made an island and everything, but a day later every time I would start it up it would say:"Unity Editor has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available". So I tried to turn of my laptop and turn it back on, but it still says the same thing. I also tried to look for programs running in the back round but nothing was. So hear are the details of my laptop and the program:Display:Intel Core i3-3227U. Performance:(1.9GHz,3MB Cache, 6GBMemory, 500GB Hard Drive, Integrated Intel HD Graphics. Software:Windows 8, McAfee, LiveSafe. Includes:DVD+/-RW Drive, Wireless-N and Bluetooth, Media Card Reader, HDMI and USB 3.0,4-Cell Battery,Waves MaxxAudio. And I am using the latest free version of the unity editor.

You might see if there's anything interesting in your editor log file. Without knowing some sort of error message, this is a pretty hard problem to diagnose. You might try updating your graphics drivers or reinstalling Unity.

One thing that jumps out at me: you're running with integrated graphics. That's not necessarily a problem, but it's not recommended for render-heavy development (or ga$$anonymous$$g, for that matter).

I've upgraded several times and each time I think it will fix the crashing. Sometimes it improves a bit but in general Unity is still the crashiest program I own by far. If I were to use Unity for 8 hours I would probably experience close to 30 crashes in that time frame. I'm on a mac and Unity 4.5.3 (pro) now. It crashes the most often if I try to change a scene in the editing mode, but it will crash in many other situations as well. I've tried to just stop using scenes altogether, as I know many developers have done, for the sole purpose of avoiding crashes. If scenes exit they should be usable!

What Unity can do is great but I'm very disappointed with the quality of the product in terms of crashes.

Ive posted like 50 crash reports, which seems like yelling into a trashcan as much good as it's ever done.

Try running the unity with a new and empty project to see if the problem is in your project setup or not.

Where exactly are you referring to? Could you give a walk-through to get to this option? I'm new to Unity and this wasn't really specific enough...
