Question by paulknight10 · Feb 18, 2014 at 05:07 PM · platformelevatorlift

creating a multi platform elevator

Hi all,

I'm trying to understand how to construct an elevator script that will move up and down to more than two positions. I'd also like to be able to input the floor to move to via numeric input on screen. Is this something that should be relatively easy to setup? Anyone got a suggestion on how to tackle it?

Thanks in advance.

Here is a bit of start code. It assumes the elevator platform is a Rigidbody with'isKinematic' set to true. It defines the original position as floor 0. If you don't want eased movement, change from Lerp() to MoveTowards() and adjust the 'speed' parameter. Attach this script to your platform. You can hit the 0 - 9 keys to move up to specific floors. You can use GUI to construct buttons rather than my use of 'inputString'.

 #pragma strict

 public var deltaFloor = 1.25;
 public var newPos;
 public var speed = 1.5;

 private var startFloor : Vector3;

 function Start() {
     newPos = transform.position;
     startFloor = transform.position;
     transform.position = startFloor + startFloor * deltaFloor;
 }

 function Update () {
     if (Input.inputString.Length > 0) {
         var val : int;
         if (int.TryParse(Input.inputString, val)) {
             SelectFloor(val);
         }
     }

      var pos = Vector3.Lerp(transform.position, newPos, Time.deltaTime * speed);
      rigidbody.MovePosition(pos);
 }

 function SelectFloor(floor : int) {
     newPos = startFloor + floor * deltaFloor * Vector3.up;
 }

very neat script! but when playing, my platform starts way offset on +Y and +Z and slowly approaches default position. sometimes it even loops and never reaches it... :-(
