Question by galantrider · Feb 23, 2014 at 10:48 PM · sidescroll

I need help with control.

Im trying to do a 2D side scrolling game similar to the Mario swimming level. I only want him to swim straight up and have gravity to pull him back down, no left or right option. I have a script tied to an animation but its activated by speed. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you, here is the script so far... FYI Im an absolute beginner.

using UnityEngine; using System.Collections;

public class FishControllerScript : MonoBehaviour {

 public float maxspeed = 10f;
 bool facingRight = true;
 Animator anim;
 void Start () {
     anim = GetComponent <Animator> ();

 }

 void FixedUpdate () {

     float move = Input.GetAxisRaw ("Vertical");
     anim.SetFloat ("Speed", Mathf.Abs (move));
         rigidbody2D.velocity = new Vector2 (move * maxspeed, rigidbody2D.velocity.x);

 }

}

Now that I have up, down control how would i get the fish to "jump" up as opposed to just climbing upwards?

Ins$$anonymous$$d of using velocity of the rigidbody, try using rigidbody2D.AddForce()

While it is in the air, you should maybe have a bool ( inAir ) set to true and check if it is true before you GetAxis to make sure you don't jump while you're in the air

one thing I notice right off the bat is that you have the x velocity vector in the y position of the vector2 that you are applying to the rigidbody..

this:

  rigidbody2D.velocity = new Vector2 (move * maxspeed, rigidbody2D.velocity.x);

Should be changed to this:

  rigidbody2D.velocity = new Vector2 ( rigidbody2D.velocity.x ,move * maxspeed );
