Shadow Hacks - Getting Dynamic Shadows with Unity Free?

Let me just start out by saying that I'm no genius with Unity by any stretch of the imagination. That is why I'm polling the community on this matter.

Now then, with Unity Free, you can now have shadows by using directional lights. So to start my little experiment, I created a new project and made a small room with a point light and a cube seen here: alt text

I then attached a directional light to the point light and made a small script using "transform.LookAt(target);" with the target being the cube. This allowed me to achieve the following effect: alt textalt text

The shadow works great, but as you can see the light from the directional light causes the walls to light up and such depending on where the directional light is aiming. I've tried playing with layers, but that doesn't work; all of the walls and the cube need to be on the same layer to receive the shadows. As I understand it, shadows aren't rendered but are instead a deficit in light, which means you need the light source to be there. But I'm not really sure if I'm right about that.

So I was wondering if it may be possible to create a shader that could be used on the walls which would accept only shadows and not any light. Even better, a shader that would only accept shadows and light from a certain layer or light type. I have no experience with shaders though. Again, I'm just mucking around here with an idea I thought could be pretty handy for us Free users. If this is impossible, I'll probably just look into projectors and blob shadows lol.

Any update to this? I imagine projectors is the only way to go here, but still curious as to whether anything else was found...
