How can I create an infinite 3D field of objects?

Hi, First post and definitely new to unity, but a long time programmer in c#. Anyway, I want to create a 3D game where the player is in 3rd person standing at the bottom of the screen on a barrel, looking out over an infinite view of floating barrels (row after row off into the distance). The player will jump from barrel top to barrel top as the rows of barrels move towards the screen. The player should be able to jump to the next row to the right or left or straight infinitely. I have 2 main questions.

  1. What is the best way to generate the field of scrolling barrels infinitely? I was thinking about moving a spawner in a nested loop creating barrels, but they don't lay out correctly because dimensions change as you move out along the z plane... Also, I want to be able to skip barrels at higher levels of play to leave gaps...

  2. How can I make sure my player jumps to the next barrel using physics? I am using the stock player from the beta assets, he jumps just fine, but he almost always misses the barrel. I want to click on a barrel and have him jump to that point. Not sure how to do that..

Thanks for the help! Jeff

Hi Jeff. Unity Answers is designed for answering one specific, technical question at a time. And it does not do well with design questions. We ask that design/discussion question like this one be asked on Unity Forums. They are better designed for it, and I think you will find they will have the answers you are looking for. And given your problem, I highly recommend you have that design discussion. In addition you might research endless whatever on both UA and the forums. There are numerous posts on the issue. Good luck, and we welcome any single issue, specific technical problem you may have in the future.
