Prevent user from entering any text beside English.

Hi,

I have a text box in my game and I want to prevent people from entering any character beside English in it. How can I do that?

Thanks.

It depends on how you created this text box and what platforms you're exporting to. And there's no way to deter$$anonymous$$e if English is the language that the word originated from, so I assume you mean you want to limit the text to characters only available in the ASCII table, I.e. Non-Unicode or UTF-8 digits.

Note that "English" is not a character set, but a language. Limiting the character set will not prevent people from using other languages. Take german for example, even without the "umlaut" characters (ä, etc.) it's still very possible to write in the language, ie. "Ich gehe jetzt nach Hause".

You are right, I was not clear enough.

What I want is to restrict the player to only input English characters, also numbers are acceptable. (I think it's called alpha-numeric?)

And I'm using 2D Toolkit for GUI.

Thanks.

Well, look at http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/ScriptReference/GUI.TextField.html. You can look at the string each time through OnGUI() and check to see what characters have been typed. If you detect a character you don't want, just remove it from the string.

English character are constrained within the ASCII values, so you could check if all chars are within 0 and 255

@fafase's answers did it, "English character are constrained within the ASCII values, so you could check if all chars are within 0 and 255".
