Moving prefabs onto the scene bug?

Problem: Placing prefabs in the scene by dragging and dropping always places the prefab in front of the editor camera. It only started doing this recently.

I use to be able to place prefabs in the scene near the ground or around other objects. Now, i have to zoom my camera all the way in near the ground and place the prefab in order to get it close to where i want it to. Anyone know of a cause?

Has one of the axes in the prefab become set to some bizarre number farther back behind the camera?

No, its not that. When i drag the prefab, i can only move it directly in front of my editor camera. Basically, i can move it only within a 2d plane in front of my camera.
