AnimationClip must be marked as Legacy

Hi Guys, I'm trying to setup a character with a set of animations that need to tween nicely between them selves. I got it all setup as a Generic rig and everything sort of works well but Unity insists that the animations of this character be marked as Legacy. Why must I? As soon as I do I can't get the animations to work correctly anymore and even if I could, as far as I know, you can't fade or merge the animations together with the legacy system, Isn't that right?

Please help. Cheers.
