Physics Components Doing Weird Things to Armature

Hey guys.

I'm having a most unexpected problem. I'm making equipment items for my game, and in the instance of weapons and armour, I tried using colliders. Then, all strangeness ensued. Here's what happened:

The player character has an armature. Attached at some level in the armature hierarchy is an equipped item, which has a physics collider. As soon as the collider is added, the position of everything in the armature hierarchy is immediately set to the position of the object with the collider component, so each piece of the armature now has its center on the equipped item. This doesn't happen just during gameplay, but actually in the scene view as well, so if I select a piece of the armature (the spine, for instance), the gizmo now appears over the equipped item, not over where it should be. In fact, whenever the equipped item is moved, I can observe the positions of the armature parts moving synchronously, which doesn't make any sense, since they're the item object's parents. Then, as soon as the collider is removed from the item game object, everything returns to normal.

As a final note, this is happening with any collider component, but not with certain other physics components, such as rigidbody.

If anyone has a clue what's going on, that would be most helpful. I haven't been able to find anyone with a similar problem.

I got some different but equally weird error with parenting a rigidbody to another rigidbody. Not sure if this is helpful.

Judging by the fact that no one is responding, it seems that no one has a clue. The only thing is, this seems like such a fundamental problem. How can no one else have run into this??
