Question by AndyMartin458 · May 30, 2014 at 05:55 PM · sorting order

How do I turn off the new hierarchy sorting?

I truly hate the new sorting by transforms instead of by names. It makes it way harder for me to sort through the objects mentally. I've had the project organized a certain way for years and now things are different for no reason other than Unity made a lame, arbitrary choice. Is there an option to turn it back to original?

You have to create a script to use the old name style:

Here is the documentation: http://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/BaseHierarchySort.html

Here is a forum post were someone already created the script for you and discussion: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/248298-Unity-4-5-New-Hierarchy-Window-sorting

@AndyMartin458 What I personally did was:

  1. click edit>preferences

  2. go to General tab and set 'Enable Alpha Numeric Sorting'

  3. When you return to the 'Hierarchy Tab' there will be a new option added to the right of the search box called 'Transform Child Order'

  4. Select 'Alphabetical Sort'...and you are done.

Good luck with all of your projects.

Putting a little script into every single project is a real inconvenience, considering it has to go into EVERY project that I ever create from here on out.

I have pointed this out in the Feedback Area. Please add your voice to the conversation over in Feedback and request that the old alphanumeric sorting be the standard, and a dropdown list be provided in EditorSettings for new experimental ordering.

Thanks.
