Question by Hermitao · Jun 19, 2014 at 07:34 AM · parent

C# How can I parent an object that touches a trigger to that trigger?

I am making a pirate themed game, and my objective here is to make the entire ship to turn into children of the player (the ship is tagged as "MainShip1", if you need it). How can I do this? Thank you! Here's my code that is inside the trigger, but I don't know what sould I do to make it work:

void OnTriggerEnter(Collider collision) { if (collision.gameObject.tag == ("Player")) { gameObject.transform.parent = collision.transform.gameObject; } }

Use transform.root This works well if you can guarantee that the root is your intended target

 void OnTriggerEnter(Collider collision) {
     if (collision.gameObject.tag == ("Player")) {
         gameObject.transform.root.parent = collision.transform;
     }
 }

There are a couple of other ways too. You could browse up the hierarchy looking for a specific name.

 string tragetName = "PirateParent";

 // Assign current in your OnTriggerEnter method
 transform current;
 string currentName = current.name;

 while (currentName != targetName){
     current = current.parent;
     currentName = current.name;

     // The break is needed to prevent an infinite loop if you get to the root
     if (current == current.root){
         break;
     }
 }
 // Do whatever you like with current

A final method is to use SendMessageUpwards and have a receiving component higher up the hierarchy.
