No animation when importing 3ds keyframe model

Hi I have a 3DS model that has keyframe animation (a plane that lowers its wheels and puts them back up again). When I drag the file into Unity (4.3) the Animations Tab in the inspector says "No Animation data available". The Rig type is Generic. The Model gets an Animator Property. What am I missing?

Thank you for your reply, When changing Rig type to Legacy the Animations Tab in the inspector still says "No Animation data available". If I make an instance of the model the Animations property of the Animation Component states Size as 0. Any ideas?

It is difficult to tell why so occurs. The best to export your format to fbx. Open your file in 3d $$anonymous$$ax and see your animation. Then export at fbx. And then to add in Unity with Rig type to Legacy.

If you are exporting your model file with animation as FBX,makes sure that the export animation is checked in export settings.Only keyframes of position, scale, rotation and skin animation can be exported. If you are making a vertex animation or an animation using any modifier wont be taken.

it is a .3DS converted from DirectX. The animation does play in the 3DS version. I have attached the 3DS file, perhaps it is the way it is exported?

@sethuraj tells everything truly. For export from 3ds in fbx it is possible to use, for example, 3d max (with the set plug-in for fbx) or Blender. Unfortunately I won't be able to look or convert your file, as the Internet at me on a tablet.

OK. I figured it out in the end as I don't have 3DSMax just a .3ds file I couldn't convert to fbx that way. I needed to convert the 3DS to FBX using autodesk converter (free, I used version 10.2 as the latest didn't work).

Thanks for all your help.
