Question by j-millen · Jul 13, 2014 at 10:04 PM · materialnormal mapcylinder

Why isn't the bump map showing?

In 4.5.2, Indie version, I made a bump map texture as the Unity manual says, and it shows nicely on the bumped diffuse material rendering in the inspector, on a sphere. But no 3D bump effect is showing on new primitive objects (cylinder, cube, sphere) with that material. What could possibly be wrong? The tiling seems OK. Older objects with bumps still look OK. material cylinder

normalmap effects only occur if the object is lit, so make sure you have a directional or point light on the same layer and it illu$$anonymous$$ates your object

If the object is lit, and the light is a pixel light (not vertex), plus the object needs to be UV mapped.

try using a Base texture in the base texture slot with the same colour as the main colour.

It's worse than I thought. I can't find any bump mapped objects that work. I added an instance of "wallConcreteRough" from the Asset Store and it looks flat. $$anonymous$$ore background: I'm running $$anonymous$$ac OS X $$anonymous$$avericks on a recent $$anonymous$$acAir. The scene is the Island Demo, which has a directional light. wall

$$anonymous$$ore background: I restored Unity (Indie) 4.3.4 and noticed the same absence of bump map effects. But on a different scene, $$anonymous$$uktar (also from the Asset Store) I could see the bump maps! The Island demo is light mapped, but I didn't think that should affect new objects close to the camera.

Look how beautiful it is in a different scene (below). $$anonymous$$ust be something about the Island Demo project settings... (It's not just the texture, I tried that in the failed scene. Layer is "default" both places.) mantra cylinder in test project

Got it now. MagicoCreator and Eric5h5 were right; it was just necessary to move a light closer so that it had a stronger effect, especially in the outside instance. Thank you, folks. mantra lit
