Question by gabe87hun · Aug 01, 2014 at 10:39 AM · collidermeshfilterdynamically

Change MeshColliders mesh dynamically

I have made water surface class Like this:

 public class Water : MonoBehaviour {

     public float scale = 0.375f;
     public float speed = 1.0f;
     public float noiseStrength = 0.75f;
     public float noiseStepSpeed = 1.0f;

     float noiseStep = 1.0f;
     Vector3[] baseHeight;
     Mesh mesh;

     // Use this for initialization
     void Start () {
         mesh = GetComponent<MeshFilter>().mesh;
     }

     // Update is called once per frame
     void Update () {
         if (baseHeight == null)
             baseHeight = mesh.vertices;

         Vector3[] vertices = new Vector3[baseHeight.Length];
         //noiseStep += Time.deltaTime * noiseStepSpeed;
         int count = 0;
         for (var i = 0; i < vertices.Length; i++)
         {
             Vector3 vertex = baseHeight[i];
             vertex.y += Mathf.Sin(Time.time * speed + baseHeight[i].x + baseHeight[i].y + baseHeight[i].z) * scale;
             vertex.y += Mathf.PerlinNoise(baseHeight[i].x + noiseStep, baseHeight[i].y + Mathf.Sin(Time.time * 0.1f)) * noiseStrength;

             vertices[i] = vertex;
         }
         mesh.vertices = vertices;
         mesh.RecalculateNormals();

     void OnTriggerEnter(Collider other)
     {
         Debug.Log("trigger");
     }

     void OnTriggerExit(Collider other)
     {
         Debug.Log("trigger exit");
     }
 }

I have attached this to a high poly cuboid (properties: has a mesh collider with trigger enabled). I wan't to use this, to see if some objects are touching the water surface, or are under water. I need to change the mesh in the MeshCollider to the mesh of the MeshFilter. I've tried assigning it directly, but it doesn't work. The colliding mesh stays the same as on Scene start.

Hi, you might be interested in this answer: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/51241/make-mesh-collider-constantly-change.html

Basically people try to say that this can't be done using mesh collider.
