Interrupt state for mecanim state machine with legacy animation

I have a legacy animation which comes in form of fbx clips. Therefore, I can't use multi-layer feature in mecanim. Right now, I have animation state for "Idle", "Dying Idle" (When hp is lower than 25%), and "Spell casting" (While casting spell). I don't know how would I interrupt each of the state with "Damaged" (When you get hit) animation clip. For example, while chanting, the character can get hit and play damage clip (like falling down). After the clip is finished, he will return to chanting animation again. The same goes for "Idle" and "Dying Idle".

How would I do that without layering in mecanim? Even if I have the layering system, I still don't know how I would I limited this interruption to only state "Idle", "Dying Idle", and "Spell Casting" since "Any State" will interrupt any states.

If you want it to totally kick in overriding the rest, simply place it on a higher layer, setting the layer to override. Otherwise, perhaps you can implement Events, found in animation import tab.

I don't recommend using 'Any State' unless you can actually make it work. It tends to wind up looping the current animation through and through.
