Changing the Humanoid Root?

I'm working on a first person game that includes swimming underwater animations where you see the body. I don't want the body animations driving the motion of the camera so I have the body pivoting around the camera. This works fine in the generic rig however we want to add IK so I changed to rig to Humanoid to support that. Everything seems set up correctly however now the body animations are no longer staying at the original pivot, causing the geometry to move in front of the camera, especially when blending between animations.

I believe this is because Humanoid changes where the root is to the hips instead of the head where I want it to be. In generic rigs you have the option to choose your root but this is not the case for Humanoids.

We've attempted to fix the body location in runtime with a script but it isn't good enough so I'm stumped and would like to know if anyone has an answer to this problem:

Is it possible to use the Humanoid avatar and change it's root?
Or.. Do you have any ideas that could do what I am looking for here?
OR...Do you recommend an IK solution that doesn't use the Humanoid avatar
