Question by Paddygezus · Oct 08, 2014 at 12:11 PM · nullreferenceexceptionspawningspriterenderer

Problem spawning sprites

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone can lend a hand.

I've got code that spawns instances of sprites. Seems to work fine the first time the script is run in Unity, but when it is called again to respawn a sprite Unity gives me a NullReferenceException error. Basically what I'm trying to do is respawn sprites once existing ones have been destroyed, a la match 3 games like bejewelled. When 3 of my sprites are matched the update function calls back to the below function, the same function that spawns the sprites in the first instance, to spawn more.

 public void CreateMask()
     {
         color = maskMats[Random.Range(0, maskMats.Length)];
         SpriteRenderer RandomMask = sphere.AddComponent<SpriteRenderer> ();
         RandomMask.sprite = Resources.Load<UnityEngine.Sprite> ("Materials/" + color);
         isMatched = false;

I'm not sure why I'm getting this error. Also happy if there is a neater/better way to complete this.

Many Thanks

With nullreferenceexceptions it's always nice to know which reference is null.

Some element of mask$$anonymous$$ats may have been destroyed. You may have lost the asset you're trying to load from resources (because you destroyed it or something)

In any case, use debug logs or something to figure out which exact reference is null and chances are the solution will become apparent.

Hi, the null reference appears at line 5 above, so I'm led to believe it could be the sprite renderer? The mask$$anonymous$$ats and Random$$anonymous$$ask sprite renderer are being added to an empty game object that exists in a prefab on each spawn of that prefab. I hope this helps!
