Changing a spriterendere.sprite code question

I've read a lot about it on the internet and got pretty far I think. I'm trying to show the amount of lives on screen with sprites.

Code:

 using UnityEngine;
 using System.Collections;

 public class life : MonoBehaviour {

     public Sprite zero;
     public Sprite one;
     public Sprite two;
     public Sprite three;
     public caughtSomething CS;

     void start(){

         CS = this.gameObject.GetComponent<caughtSomething>();

     }

     void Update () {
         if (CS.lives == 1) {
             this.GetComponent<SpriteRenderer>().sprite = one;    }
         if (CS.lives == 2) {
             this.GetComponent<SpriteRenderer>().sprite = two;    }
         if (CS.lives == 3) {
             this.GetComponent<SpriteRenderer>().sprite = three;    }
         else  {
             this.GetComponent<SpriteRenderer>().sprite = zero;    }
     }

 }

Now, Unity keeps saying; Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

at line 21 (if (CS.lives ==1)).

I think it's trying to say that my script 'caughtSomething.cs' has no variable called lives. but it definately has. any ideas?
