Can you change AnimationClip in controller via scripting?

Hey guys. I was looking to make generic animation controllers (mechanim) for my characters and using the in-built state machine. To make it customizable I'd like to set up animations in my controller and then be able to change their actual motion clip in code.

So for example I'd like to access state "attack1" and change its motion to anything I'd like (it could be a sword attack animation, club attack animation, depeneding on player's weapon).
