Question by JDuaneJ · Dec 04, 2014 at 12:56 AM · transitionimage effects

Screen transition using material effect?

I'd like to know if someone can help me with a screen transition using a material instead of a GUITexture. I'm trying to create a wipe transition, but using the Alpha Cutoff parameter in the material to create a dissolve effect.

I'm assuming this would involve putting a quad onto the screen with the material and animation when the scene changes.

Hi JDuane!

I really want to help, but I don't know how you would like to proceed! Animation (easy and bizarre) or Coding (harder but better)? And could you give the code that actually changes the scene?

**Hey!

So it's tricky right now. $$anonymous$$y "game" has cutscenes that I would like to transition with this dissolve/wipe effect using a material.

As of this point in time, I've created a "$$anonymous$$ockup" in Unity using a quad (parented to the camera), material, and an animation. I'm calling a function to PlayAnimation.

Attached is the mockup animation. Also, I have the generic Fade In/Out .CS script for most of the cutscenes that I found online, but I wanted to give the transitions a bit more flavor and polish. :)

So, where to go from here...

I'd like to have creative control over the look of the "Wipe" in terms of material, texture and transition/animation speed. I think building something in C# with outsourced parameters for the above would be the best case.

Any help is appreciated!

I tried attaching my screen fader code but for some reason it wont let me comment with that code. Whatever, the code is here: Screen-Fader

I'd go the easier route. It would be easier to code as well as edit the look of - by having a transparent texture that is on a big quad, scroll across the screen (transform position changing) and you just create a gradient or whatever to have it appear to do this wipe thing. Then might as well have it flip 180 degrees once it covers the screen to put the "fadey" end on the other side, and scroll it further once the camera has moved or scene loaded... Not elegant but effective and easy! Good luck!

Yeah! Ins$$anonymous$$d of rotating it, simply disable it when transition done or after a desired time. (gameObject.SetActive(false);) to totally stop it (Ram saved). And JDuane, if these are some graphics of your game... I wan't to marry you and buy your game twice :D

Sweet thanks for the reply. I think I understand what you're saying $$anonymous$$D. Seems pretty straight forward. I'm no engineer, so we'll see how it goes. Lol this may give birth to a Unity plugin.

$$anonymous$$.G. - thanks, yes that's my game. It's actually an interactive story for kids 11+. We're going scary! Lol

Yeah, so I did a mockup and this solution does give a wipe transition, but it's not the dissolve look that I'm searching for like in the example gif.

I couldn't tell you how to get that exact effect, are you going for a gradient co$$anonymous$$g in from multiple angles, without overlapping?

Edit: oh wait, had to go to the linked version of the gif to get it to animate on my phone - now that I see that effect, yeah I definitely can't tell you how to do that lol. I think that is gonna be tricky to get just right.
