Question by ludo_ics · Dec 19, 2014 at 11:06 PM · texturemobilemovie

play a movie file on texture for ios/android

Hello everyone,

I know a lot of user have already asked this question but I didn't find what I was looking for in all the previous post.

What I would like to do is to play a movie on a texture (a sphere or any other GameObject). I saw on the documentation that MovieTexture isn't supported on ios and android.

As far as I know by reading the documentation, we can only play a movie in full screen for ios and android using handleID but that's not what I'm looking for.

I saw there are some plugin in the asset store such as Mobile Movie Texture, Easy Movie Texture and other plugin but they all have to purchased first and my company won't be able to purchase those plugin. A free plugin exist for ios called Video Texture Pro 2.0 but with Unity5 beta 14, it works fine on Mac but on ios the texture appears black and nothing happen(no sound either).

Why do I need to play a movie on a GameObject? The purpose of my application is to display a sphere with the movie playing in it and put it at the center with a camera inside (in fact 2 for using VR) and rotate the camera using smartphone sensosr in order to the user to be able to "look around" as he was in the scene.

I would like to know if something will be done with Unity5 for playing a movie on a GameObject? I also thought about creating my own plugin but as I'm totally new to this I even don't know how to start :S

Could you please give me some advice/opinion for my issue? From where should I start to be able to resolve my issue? I've spend hours on the internet (google is our friend) and I found nothing.

I really thank you in advance for your help.

Why can't your company spend a small amount of money on assetstore to get a working solution?

because my company is a tiny company and concerning money my company is in the red so everytime we can avoid spending money we do it even if it means to find/create a solution which will need hours/days.

As this question has been asked a bunch of time since 2012/2013 I also thought that with the arrive of Unity5 something could have been done for this part but $$anonymous$$ovieTexture didn't extended for ios (I didn't try to export to android but I guess I'll have the same result)
