How to use UI > Text object in Public variable?

I'm following the Beginner Space Shooter project and I've run into a road block. The problem is that the tutorial uses GUIText. GUIText no longer seems to be available so I'm using Text as a replacement. I've created a public Text variable in my script but it's causing an error. I also can't drag a Text object into the public variable slot in Unity. The words in bold show highlighted as red in my editor. Here is my code...

 using UnityEngine;
 using System.Collections;

 public class GameController : MonoBehaviour {

     public GameObject hazard;
     public Vector3 spawnValues;
     public int hazardCount;
     public float spawnWait;
     public float startWait;
     public float waveWait;

     public int score;
     public **Text** scoreText;

     void Start(){
         score = 0;
         StartCoroutine(SpawnWaves ());
     }

     IEnumerator SpawnWaves(){
         yield return new WaitForSeconds (startWait);
         while(true){
             for(int i = 0; i < hazardCount; i++){
                 Vector3 spawnPosition = new Vector3 (Random.Range (-spawnValues.x, spawnValues.x), spawnValues.y, spawnValues.z);
                 Quaternion spawnRotation = Quaternion.identity;
                 Instantiate (hazard, spawnPosition, spawnRotation);
                 yield return new WaitForSeconds(spawnWait);
             }
             yield return new WaitForSeconds(waveWait);
         }
     }

     void Update(){
         scoreText.**text** = "Score: " + score;
     }

 }

add using UnityEngine.UI; at the top of the file...

EDIT: if "it's causing an error." it's usually a good idea to post that error so we can see what it is instead of guessing ;)

EDIT2: (since i'm here) no need to keep updating the text property in Update() - just do it when the score changes - otherwise you're building strings all the time and it's wasting resources! only do work when you really need to ;)
