Question by TRG96 · Jan 24, 2015 at 11:25 PM · rotation axis

Rotating a certain axis towards another object

There are plenty of examples on this but pretty much all of them deal with pointing the Z axis towards the target but I have a rigged character and I want its head to turn towards the camera. I have the following code

 Vector3 targetDir = target.position - transform.position;
         float step = speed * Time.deltaTime;
         Vector3 newDir = Vector3.RotateTowards(transform.forward, targetDir, step, 0.0F);
         Debug.DrawRay(transform.position, newDir, Color.red);
         transform.rotation = Quaternion.LookRotation(newDir);

this works fine for rotating the forward axis towards the target but I want the X axis to rotate towards the target, when I change it to

 Vector3 newDir = Vector3.RotateTowards(transform.right, targetDir, step, 0.0F);

it doesnt work. It starts to spin around crazy. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks

Look at my answer here. To make the x axis point towards the object, replace transform.up (look at my comment on that answer) with transform.right. If you want instantaneous change like transform.LookAt, you can remove the Quaternion.Lerp statement and directly assign toRotation to transform.rotation.
