When I put my script onto an object unity crashes

 private BaseCharacterClass class1 = new BaseMageClass();
 private BaseCharacterClass class2 = new BaseWarriorClass();


these 2 lines of code crash unity when i put them onto an object.

 using UnityEngine;
 using System.Collections;
 
 public class TestGUI : MonoBehaviour {
 
     private BaseCharacterClass class1 = new BaseMageClass();
     private BaseCharacterClass class2 = new BaseWarriorClass();
 
 
     // Use this for initialization
     void Start () {
     
     }
     
     // Update is called once per frame
     void Update () {
     
     }
 
     void OnGUI(){
         GUILayout.Label(class1.CharacterClassName);
         GUILayout.Label(class1.CharacterClassDescription);
         GUILayout.Label(class1.Intellect.ToString()); //number values, not strings
         GUILayout.Label(class2.CharacterClassName);
         GUILayout.Label(class2.CharacterClassDescription);
         GUILayout.Label(class2.Strength.ToString());  //number values, not strings
 
     }
 }

try posting those classes - otherwise there's not enough information to suggest what's going wrong.

try to remove empty methods too - it's more for us to read when helping you.
