Dependency between scripts causing error

Hi, I have to scripts that are related to each order.

To exemplify, I have a 'Player', which is a singleton controller script that has the following method:

 public bool IsSelling()
 {
     return _currentEnergy > 0 && _playerCharacter.Rest == false;
 }

This method is just used by another script, called 'ClientBehavior':

 private void FixedUpdate()
 {
     if ( !Player.Instance.IsSelling() )
          _makingOrder = false;
 }

And the 'Rest' attribute is in the 'PlayerBehavior'.

The 'PlayerController' script is attached to a game object in the game menu scene. The 'PlayerBehavior' and 'ClientBehavior', on the other hand, are both in the game scene, where the game really happens, attached to two different game objects. The problem is that sometimes (this doesn't occurs every time I start the game, it's almost 50% to 50%) I receive this error:

NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Player.IsSelling () (at Assets/Scripts/Core/Player.cs:177)

ClientBehavior.Update () (at Assets/Scripts/Game/ClientBehavior.cs:104)

Which seems to me is that the method is trying to access the _playerCharacter.Rest variable which hasn't been initialized yet (maybe the 'ClientController' was compiled before?). I'm wondering if that is correct and how should I prevent this error.

Thank you in advance.

It sounds like you're right about the initialization. I don't know where you're referencing _playerCharacter but you should consider the difference between Awake() and Start(). It sounds like you might want to try putting the reference in Start(). Also, unless youre dealing with rigidbodies and physics you should not use FixedUpdate().
