Black-Core color glowing effect

Hi everyone, (more specifically the texture gurus)

I have always been wondering how to create the same black-glowing effect you would see on special types of lightsabers in Star Wars:The Old Republic. Since I started with unity and 3ds I have always been curious on how that had been done, but I could never find a tutorial on the Interwebs to guide me to create such a thing. Here is a picture so that more people can know what I am talking about.

Can somebody point me in the right direction?

(note: I have no idea what to tag this question as)

I believe the term is Emissive, but not sure for Unity5. Here's a manual link : http://docs.unity3d.com/$$anonymous$$anual/shader-SelfIllumFamily.html

To me that looks like a black colored mesh that is above the glow texture, nothing more. Could be a seperate quad with that shape as well. However look at the point where the glow starts at the handle. I think it's a mesh

This might not give a super bloomy glow effect, but it's one step of the way at least: https://youtu.be/fD_ho_ofY6A?t=11m55s
