Low cost glow around a sphere

Hey all, I have this space scene I've been working on and am quite happy with it except one thing, a glow effect around the planets. I've tried a few different ways to do it, and am currently just rendering a single particle to produce the glow. The issue is when objects near the edges of a camera, they become slightly distorted, but particles do not, and causes some clipping: http://imgur.com/x7hasGE

There's going to be a good amount of planets and moons in the scene, so I'd think a glow shader might have been a little too render heavy. The only other option I have thought of was to make a gameobject plane that just orients itself to always face the camera, but the script might be as render heavy as a shader or something else. Any suggestions?

The glow effect you are using will work just fine if you want.If your planet's pivot is at centre,keep a quad with Additive(Just the method you are using now).Use render order (layers) to render the quads always behind the planets.use a script to make the quad look at the camera always (use transform.lookat()). This will help you get started
