Detect global mouse pointer click events

I want to detect global right mouse clicks.

I had been doing that by manually checking for the button state in Update() but have started to change all my mouse stuff to use the IPointerFoo stuff to avoid events going through the HUD UI to the game world.

I've implemented IPointerClickHandler on some objects in the scene so far and that works. (So I've got some idea how it's done). However, in order to try and catch all mouse right clicks I've tried implementing IPointerClickHandler in a monobehaviour (C#) and adding that to an empty game object. And that never seems to get called.

Now, I suspect that (given the need for a physics raycaster) the way the pointer interface stuff works is by raycasting till it hits something then calling whatever pertinent IPointerFoo methods are applicable (if they exist). So it wouldn't be surprising that there's no call to the global IPointerClickHandler I implemented because there's nothing for the ray to hit.

Is the empty game object the problem here?

What are my options for implementing a global pointer click handler?

(I could go back to the old way using Update() but I'd rather not if there was a "better" way).
